On Monday 7th Rev Jeni Goring, Chair CCWA Executive, and Rev Isobelle Shortreed, Ecumenical Ministry Officer met with Rev Shwe Lin – General Secretary of the Council of Churches Myanmar who is on a visit to National and State Ecumenical Councils in Australia.
It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss at first hand the enormous changes that have taken place in Myanmar under the new government; and to address a new Report – Displacement and Poverty in South East Burma.
Rev Shwe Lin was very interested to explore relationships between the National Council of Churches and the State Ecumenical bodies in Australia. His visit will continue in Melbourne and in Sydney where he will continue to explore this theme and hopes to take some practical, administrative and sructural pointers back to Myanmar to assist their organisation.
It was also a delight to have met memebers of the Karin Baptist Church who accompanied Rev Shwe Lin, and the Ecumenical Ministry Officer has been invited to visit and to establish a relationship with their church in Perth. One of their priorities is assisting Burmese refugees to settle in Australia and to find meaningful employment. There are Burmese groups in Perth, Katanning and other areas of the state of WA
